Historie
Když byly v roce 1800 vytvořeny arrondissementy Doubs, Pontarlier byl jedním z nich v departementu Doubs.
Geografie
Arrondissement Pontarlier se nachází v nejjižnějším z arrondissementů departementu Doubs; je největší s rozlohou 2 034,7 km2 (786 km²). Žije zde 109 841 obyvatel, což je arrondissement s nejmenším počtem obyvatel, a hustota zalidnění činí 54,0 obyvatel/km².
Okres Pontarlier sousedí na severu s okresem Montbéliard, na východě a jihu se Švýcarskem, na jihovýchodě s departementem Jura a na západě s okresem Besançon.
